The Rains Came 1939 Ah the Raj and its Victorian womanhood at its best… Have to watch to enjoy this civilizing the native and taming the damsel project…

The Streetcar Named Desire 1951 Some women are socially conditioned to await a rescue and some others await that better half to give them an opportunity to dress up… ladies it is one short life live it with or without the better half…

The Householder 1963 Did desi MILs freeze in time or what? Do men really know what it means to be married? Still relevant after 47 years. A must watch.

A man and A Woman 1966

Siddhartha 1972 Every time DG watches it she finds a new meaning. Director Conard Rook’s comentary is highly recommended. The story boards are excellent. Hemant Kumar sang O Nodi re…

Glory 1989 How much blood and sweat goes into making a tomorrow… Enjoy the sound track

When Harry Met Sally 1989

Mississippii Masala 1991 Mira Nair’s beautiful depiction intimate racism in Desi communities, is still relevant. Danzel Washington is superb. A must watch.

Like Water For Chocolate 1992 very similar to desi movie Jeevan Dhara, continents apart but lives and responsibilities of women are all the same…

The Joy Luck Club 1993 who said women can’t bond and support one another? A story of four Chinese American mother daughter duos that will force you to think beyond cliche’

Legends of Fall 1994 watched at least 3 times still can watch few more times…

The River Runs Through it 1994 How families omit the painful past as if it never happened…

One True Thing 1998 Our priorities change when life happens…

Hanging Up 2000 Highly recommended for those with over bearing sisters…

The Life of David Gail 2003 in the name of a cause how far can one go…

Something’s Gotta Give 2003 why is it so hard for some men to deal with women their own age?? Some habits die hard… highly recommended.

Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside) 2004  Ultimate picturization of Nessun Dorma, how many times DG left her body in those dire times…

51 Birch Street 2005: How much do we know our parents and their lives? A very compelling film highly recommended. Available in local libraries and there are few clips on youtube too.

Miss Potter 2006 She was a pioneer for women writers…

Volver 2006 When partners cheat women know. Culture and traditions push women to the wall and choices they make should not surprize the custodians of culture. How women bond, support and survive.

Brick Lane 2007 Did life stop for those who left native homeland or homeland froze in time for them? One woman’s journey of self discovery…

The Reader 2008 a nation in guilt…

An Education 2009 Every young woman should watch…

A Single Man 2009 A very poignant film, you have to watch it to know what DG means. Colin Firth is exceptional and doesn’t seem it is Tom Ford’s first directorial either. Oh the pain of invisibility, isolation and non closure…

In Therapy 2009, a brazilian film in portugese with English subtitles, a must watch for all women. Why is it so? what we want from life is never what we have. What we have is not what we want… A story of friends and discovery of self. Why is it so hard to say I love you to your girl friends who stand by you day in and day out. recently Rinks said I love you to DG at the end of a phone call. In 25 years this was the first and it was a pleasant surprize.

It’s Complicated 2009 Ex with Benefits: Sex on My Mind

Up in ther Air 2009 Men and committment, too late too little…

Sita Sings the Blues 2009 Greatest break up story ever told…

West is West 2011, though the story is sequel of East is East (1999) it is definitely about Desi lives but DG will keep it in non Desi category for it is made by second generation brits. Ila Arun is phenomenal. The pain of a wife who is nither estranged nor abandoned, her husband send her money but hasn’t seen her in 35 years. On first visit in 35 years she sees herself in the mirror and asks for her lost time back. Her relationship with his second wife, both women neither speak nor understand each other’s language but communicate their feeling and acknowledge each other’s presence in his life. Yes, in Pakistan people do object to polygamy and they refrain from giving daughters into marriage to those families with multiple wives.
